In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Undo.”
After the day I had today, I’d be happy if Internet Explorer never existed.
I have a dealership website that I have to use that requires Internet Explorer to run. In fact there are several different portals with different log ins that I have to use. So, a few years ago I downloaded Internet Explorer back on my computers (I had deleted in in favor of other browsers because it seemed to only cause delays and problems on the machine that went away the second it was no longer installed). I have now trained everyone in my office to only use IE for these dealership portals, and use another web browser of their choice for everything else (I am pretty equal opportunity when it comes to other browsers.
Today though, for some reason, one portal will only work with a previous version of IE, another will only work with the latest version and the third, which will usually behave if you hit the little “compatible” icon, wouldn’t do a damn thing. I spent two hours on hold with the dealers’ IT only to told that the problem was obviously with my version of IE and I would have to figure it out on my own. I responded that the problem was obviously with their code, since no website in the last ten years has been programmed only to work with IE, it’s an archaic and idiotic code and get off your butts and into the 21st century!
Needless to say, I’m still working on fixing Internet Explorer.
But if IE hadn’t grown into such a unwieldy monster, would open source software as we know it have come into play? I don’t have enough background to even get into the debate, but I do know for a fact that today I would have been just peachy if Internet Explorer had never been written.
